BoW Title: Doris Salcedo
Institution: Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago
Designer: Designed and developed in house by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago
Category: Digital Exhibition

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago has produced a microsite to accompany the first major retrospective of the work of Colombian artist Doris Salcedo. The site is a rich multi-media resource that aggregates five years of research on and with the artist. It includes a plethora of previously-unavailable materials, including extensive video excerpts from interviews conducted for the exhibition’s documentary film; multiple images of all of Salcedo’s bodies of work; installation photography and video; a fully-linked bibliography and a sortable exhibition history; essays by key scholars on Salcedo, and an illustrated essay by Salcedo herself.

The site has been designed to reflect the conceptual quiet of the artist’s work and the MCA’s exhibition, and borrows its palette of greys and browns from the natural materials used by the Salcedo in her work. The interface, with its appearing and disappearing type and images, subtly references to the disappeared that are the subject of the artist’s work. It was developed and designed entirely in house using the Bootstrap 3 front-end framework in addition to various custom and open-source jQuery plugins.
