RE·THINK the museum – reacting to the challenge of participation at the National Maritime Museum

Lawrence Chiles, Independent, UK

RE·THINK is an exciting new opportunity at the National Maritime Museum, London, giving visitors the space to explore, discover and reflect on the themes of the Museum, and create responses within the gallery. Launched in March 2014 the space is dedicated to multiple forms of public participation, helping the Museum to shape a dialogue with its visitors and create meaningful affect on its future programme and exhibitions, in a world where placing a comment card in a box is no longer enough.

This paper will look at how successful the space has been in this first year, and whether the Museum is listening and reacting. It will examine how tools - both digital and analogue - have captured that dialogue and what type of response has been utilised to best effect.
