Creating a ‘Museum Suite’

Demonstration
Pepijn Lemmens, Het Nieuwe Instituut, The Netherlands

Het Nieuwe Instituut was born in 2013 out of three institutions in the field of culture and creative industries: The Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI), Premsela institute for design and fashion and Virtueel Platform, knowledge institute for e-culture. This led to an interdisciplinary organisation of both archivists and hackers, curators and digital specialists. The digital team took up the complex task of housing all the institute’s plans and ambitions into one ‘Digital house’, that has the openness, flexibility and manoeuvrability required for a cultural institute in the 21st century, based on the legacy and history of 3 institutes with a wide variety of tasks, procedures and systems. The paper describes the principles we used, hurdles we had to overcome and lessons learned from creating the ‘Het Nieuwe Institute Museum Suite’.
